Abstract

This paper presents a revision of current state of Latin America decentralization studies, as well as a classification according to their theoretical approach. Studies of decentralization coming from economic, sociologic, political, new public management and internationals agencies approaches are identified. The main issue of each one is examined, introducing some analytical elements that can set a future research agenda, which mains challenges are related to the need of more multidisciplinary and comparatives studies; these should review the causes of the contrasted outcomes of decentralization process, both in Latin America as in each country.
