The text below is part of a comparative study between the urban revitalization process of the Í€œMeatpacking DistrictÍ€ in New York City, and the urban revitalization projects of Regií£o da Luz, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The article's objectives are to undertake a critical overview of the main urban sociology theories and to reflect about the ways in which comtemporary sociology is being in need of a revision of its definitions about what cities are. This analysis considers the processes of urban revitalization and gentrification, that are becoming more frequent in cities all over the world.
