Etymological Clarifications for a Critical Concept in Urban Studies Literature in Hispanic America https://www.eure.cl/index.php/eure/article/view/EURE.51.154.11
The article explores the etymological and semantic differences between the terms financiarización and financierización within the context of Hispanic American urban studies literature. Through a critical review, it highlights that ‘financiarización’ is associated with broader economic transformations, while ‘financierización’ emphasizes processes strictly tied to the formal financial system. The discussion underscores how these concepts reflect the dynamics of contemporary capitalism, particularly in the interaction between finance and territory, transforming cities into globalized financial assets. Additionally, cases from Latin America and Europe are analyzed, illustrating how these processes exacerbate urban inequalities and redefine economic and social sectors. Finally, the choice of terms is scrutinized, emphasizing the importance of precise translations that enrich academic discourse.
Francisco Vergara-Perucich Copyright (c) 2025 Revista EURE - Revista de Estudios Urbano Regionales https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-08-08 2025-08-08 51 154 1 9 10.7764/EURE.51.154.11 Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Carbon Footprint Variations in Households of Chilean Cities https://www.eure.cl/index.php/eure/article/view/EURE.51.154.01
Cities generate a large share of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which directly affect global climate change. Although it has been shown that global GHGs decreased during the socio-health pandemic, local emissions saw a sharp increase. This research studied the influence of different factors on the heating and energy carbon footprint of households in cities in south-central Chile before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. By means of multiple regression models, it was shown that wood heating, low temperatures, larger dwellings and higher number of inhabitants generally explain the increase of the carbon footprint, especially in confinement. The urgency of developing integrated public policies that consider housing energy efficiency, household energy poverty and the cultural rootedness to the use of firewood in these cities is discussed.
Carolina Rojas Diego Gálvez François Simon Marc Quintana Iván Muñiz Copyright (c) 2025 Revista EURE - Revista de Estudios Urbano Regionales https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-08-08 2025-08-08 51 154 1 22 10.7764/EURE.51.154.01 Expansion or Invasion? The Rise of Airbnb in Mexico City, 2019-2023 https://www.eure.cl/index.php/eure/article/view/EURE.51.154.02
The supply of rental housing through digital platforms has experienced notable growth in recent decades, largely as a result of the technological revolution and the rise of ICTs. Although examples of this type of rental existed prior to the arrival of Airbnb in 2008, its rise and expansion can be traced from that date onward. In this context, the present study analyzes the geographic distribution differences of various types of Airbnb accommodations and their prices, as well as the relationship this type of rental has with the traditional housing stock in Mexico City. Data from the InsideAirbnb website and Mexico’s Population and Housing Census are used for a geographic analysis at two scales, local and regional. As a result, the study presents the impact of the pandemic on short-term rental housing, identifies areas with the highest concentration by type of offering, and determines the percentage of housing units from the traditional housing stock that have been incorporated into the platform.
Laura Alejandra Garrido-Rodríguez Copyright (c) 2025 Revista EURE - Revista de Estudios Urbano Regionales https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-08-08 2025-08-08 51 154 1 25 10.7764/EURE.51.154.02 In Which Neighborhood is it Better to Grow Old? Equipment and support for autonomy within the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara (Mexico) https://www.eure.cl/index.php/eure/article/view/EURE.51.154.03
The city, analyzed from a gerontological perspective, highlights the autonomy of older adults in accessing the resources necessary to meet their daily needs. The objective of this article is to explore an analysis model of the distribution for the supply of services capable of supporting instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) within a dispersed metropolitan context at a neighborhood-scale analysis, which could contribute to semi-independent adults’ well-being. The exploration of official databases has made autonomy support destinations visible, allowing critical neighborhoods to be identified, with high demand from the aging population and little supply of autonomy support. The results are shown in a classification matrix that could guide public policy.
Alejandro Pérez-Duarte-Fernández María del Carmen Barranco-Martín Gabriela Ochoa-Covarrubias Copyright (c) 2025 Revista EURE - Revista de Estudios Urbano Regionales https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-08-08 2025-08-08 51 154 1 21 10.7764/EURE.51.154.03 Entropies in the Daily Mobility of Public University Students: An Analysis of the Torreón University Campus https://www.eure.cl/index.php/eure/article/view/EURE.51.154.04
Based on the implementation of an Origin-Destination Survey, which included perceptions regarding the daily mobility characteristics of undergraduate students at a public university in the city of Torreón, this article aims to determine the entropic phase in which the current mobility system of the city is situated. To this end, the study identifies mobility patterns and perceived accessibility within the system. Descriptive data from a student population in the state of Coahuila, Mexico, regarding their daily commutes and their opinions about the characteristics of their journeys are presented. Through the application of an Entropy-Homeostasis-Negentropy model, which allowed for the integration of the collected data with the current conditions of the transportation system, it was determined that the entropy of students’ daily mobility is in a critical phase. This highlights the urgent need to plan negentropic interventions before the system transitions into a hypercritical phase.
José Miguel Hernández-Moreno Mario Guadalupe González-Pérez Yefer Asprilla-Lara Copyright (c) 2025 Revista EURE - Revista de Estudios Urbano Regionales https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-08-08 2025-08-08 51 154 1 26 10.7764/EURE.51.154.04 Relationship between Poverty and Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon: An Empirical Study of the State of Pará https://www.eure.cl/index.php/eure/article/view/EURE.51.154.05
The state of Pará, located in the so-called Brazilian Legal Amazon, is home to a significant portion of its population living in poverty. At the same time, its land use and occupation processes are dominated by economic activities considered key drivers of deforestation in the region. This article investigates the relationship between poverty and deforestation at the municipal level between the Agricultural Censuses from 2006 to 2017, using the number of families benefiting from the Income Transfer Program “Bolsa Família” as a proxy indicator of poverty. The analysis treats poverty and deforestation as endogenous and simultaneously determined, employing the Generalized Method of Moments in three stages. The main results point to an inverse relationship between poverty and deforestation, suggesting the viability of implementing policies in the region that simultaneously address both issues, challenging the idea of a trade-off between these dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Marcelo Diniz Jorge Eduardo Simões Vanessa Alves Márcia Diniz Gabriel Moia Copyright (c) 2025 Revista EURE - Revista de Estudios Urbano Regionales https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-08-27 2025-08-27 51 154 1 27 10.7764/EURE.51.154.05 From Industrial Paternalism to Labor Flexibilization: (Re)production of Inequalities in Oil Cities, 1907-2018 https://www.eure.cl/index.php/eure/article/view/EURE.51.154.06
In this paper we analyze the processes of socio-spatial (re)configuration and production of new inequalities in two oil cities in Latin America in relation to the spatialization of industrial activity and the processes of labor relations flexibilization during the last decades. We seek to understand the socio-territorial transformations in Barrancabermeja (Colombia) and Comodoro Rivadavia (Argentina) through an approach to the relationship between the international oil market and mobility, real estate and labor markets of the territories in which production is locally articulated. We propose a comparative, multi-scalar perspective based on qualitative and quantitative sources in a theoretical framework from which we conceive space in its double condition of producer and product, historical and dynamic.
Javier Serrano-Besil Copyright (c) 2025 Revista EURE - Revista de Estudios Urbano Regionales https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-08-27 2025-08-27 51 154 1 20 10.7764/EURE.51.154.06 Socio-environmental Conflicts and Emergent Forms of Territorial Collectivity in a Coastal Zone in Southern Chile https://www.eure.cl/index.php/eure/article/view/EURE.51.154.07
Among the recent citizen mobilizations in Chile, novel forms of social grouping for local environmental causes are observed. This study investigates three cases of emerging collectivity in the Reloncaví Sound and its surroundings (a coastal zone in southern Chile) that denounce the environmental and social degradation caused by industrial salmon farming, and the lack of mechanisms for citizen participation. Identity aspects, forms of organization, repertoires of contention, and territorial linkage are analyzed, constituting what we call territorial sensitivities. These collectivities, not confined solely to the cause, shared interests, or effects on institutions or public policy, exhibit various forms and scales of complexity. On the other hand, their socio-territorial basis endows them with a political-cultural density for social life in the territory, without needing to attribute to them the heavy burden of being a social movement.
Alejandro Retamal Juan Paredes César Pérez Copyright (c) 2025 Revista EURE - Revista de Estudios Urbano Regionales https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-08-27 2025-08-27 51 154 1 24 10.7764/EURE.51.154.07 CINVA-SUDENE Connection: Professional Circulation and Knowledge Diffusion in Housing and Planning in Post-war Latin America https://www.eure.cl/index.php/eure/article/view/EURE.51.154.08
This study seeks to highlight the transnational circulation of professionals, as well as their ideas, and knowledge within the fields of Architecture, Engineering, and the Social Sciences, focusing on the connections between the Centro Interamericano de Vivienda y Planeamiento (CINVA) and the Superintendência do Desenvolvimento do Nordeste (SUDENE). The analysis centers on the professional trajectories of Hebe Gonçalves, Carlos Carneiro, and Gerson Sampaio—key figures noted for their movement across Latin American institutions during the 1950s and 1960s, and for their involvement in Brazilian initiatives at the intersection of housing programs and territorial planning. It is hypothesized that their circulation played a role in introducing and consolidating housing issues on SUDENE’s agenda, thereby establishing a point of contact with CINVA’s activities. This analysis reveals Brazil’s integration—and that of its academic and professional circles—into Latin American networks within these fields, as well as the influence of these exchanges on the Northeast region, particularly in Pernambuco.
Matheus Machado Copyright (c) 2025 Revista EURE - Revista de Estudios Urbano Regionales https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-08-27 2025-08-27 51 154 1 25 10.7764/EURE.51.154.08 Visions of Urban Planning Practice in Chile, 1931-2024 https://www.eure.cl/index.php/eure/article/view/EURE.51.154.09
Urban planning is understood as a political process that steers urban development toward the pursuit of the public good. Drawing on the interplay between planning theory and practice, this study identifies five successive paradigms shaping Chilean urban planning: functionalist, neoliberal, reformist, strategic, and sustainability-oriented. These paradigms correspond to distinct planning rationalities that have emerged since the establishment of integrated urban law in Chile to the present. Together, they offer a framework for analyzing the evolution of urban planning practices in relation to legislative reforms, regulatory frameworks, development policies, and planning instruments. Over the past three decades, planning practice has been characterized by the coexistence and overlapping of these paradigms within a regulatory environment marked by permissiveness, limited normative scope, and a strong emphasis on property rights. The earlier dichotomy between a functionalist approach—grounded in the pursuit of the common good—and a neoliberal turn toward deregulation has gradually given way to a more complex and hybrid planning landscape.
Isabel Zapata-Alegría Copyright (c) 2025 Revista EURE - Revista de Estudios Urbano Regionales https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-08-27 2025-08-27 51 154 1 21 10.7764/EURE.51.154.09 Financialization of Rental Housing: The Emergence of New Real Estate-Financial Accumulation Asset in Santiago and São Paulo https://www.eure.cl/index.php/eure/article/view/EURE.51.154.10
This article analyzes the emergence of a new financial real estate asset in the rental housing market in Santiago, Chile, and São Paulo, Brazil, within the framework of a global context of transformation and growth in rental housing markets in various cities worldwide. Using the concept of financialization, a “common trajectory” is identified in both urban contexts, where rental housing is configured as a new form of capturing financial rents. This primarily qualitative study, based on a mixed-methods approach, grounds its findings in interviews, reports, and analyses of specialized media. It explores the circulation of finance in the production and management of new real estate products, the actors and connections involved, as well as the configuration of residential rent in each case, with particular attention given to the emergence and role of corporate landlords in these emerging markets.
Adriana Marín-Toro Raquel Rolnik Copyright (c) 2025 Revista EURE - Revista de Estudios Urbano Regionales https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2025-08-08 2025-08-08 51 154 1 24 10.7764/EURE.51.154.10 The Impact of the Gig Economy on Democratic Urban Governance.
